Punk Rock Reunion In CBGB’s Shadow

Last night’s Morrison Hotel Gallery soiree featuring Bob Gruen’s classic, insider rock images from the heyday of punk was more Clash and Sex Pistols than chic and socialite, which is just the way we like it. The scene was a classic New York cross-section of wide-eyed, nubile young things and established, older rockers. In fact, some were even surprisingly well-preserved (Debbie Harry must eat the hearts of small children to look so good at 63). Bernadette Peters swooped in and ravaged the crowd with her trademark crimson tendrils while Dick Manitoba of the Dictators saw fit to grace us with his cooler-than-thou smile.

To balance out the age range and the wildly diverse, um, beauty spectrum, model Lily Cole showed up along with some members of the New York Dolls who wore a decade of excess on their face. But, as Gruen’s photographs showed us, Keith Richards made looking like a wrinkled brown paper bag kinda cool over 20 years ago (as long as you’re next to Mick “I Bathe In Sex Appeal” Jagger). Along with classic industry veterans like Patti Smith’s guitarist Lenny Kaye, the younger generation showed its support via ambassador of cool (and Sienna Miller ex) Jamie from Bloody Social.

Throughout the night, a few trends emerged: If you looked young enough to know less than 25% of Gruen’s photographed bands, then you spent way more time staring at the steadily-arriving tide of seasoned punk rockers than their photos. If you were feigning disinterest at the boldface names like an over-qualified Starbucks Barista, then you spent most of your time angling to get in their photos, which were being snapped like strobe lights at a Ramones concert. If you were one of those coveted musicians for whom Gruen would drop his book-signing pen and give you a hug, then you spent most of your time corralling your young, gay entourage into obedience (Debbie Harry must own an orphanage for burgeoning groupies somewhere).

The rest of us ogled the stunning images of Gruen’s subjects, some remarkably candid, others posed like alcohol-fueled mannequins with a dangerously chaffing penchant for leather pants. All were fantastic and offered a completely fresh take on the punk and rock icons we think we know so well. Even if you’re not a David Bowie devotee, the show is a must-see for anyone who wants to be culturally literate in the ways of music. To further your sonic education, Gruen will be showing his images until June 24th. Check them out at Morrison Hotel Gallery and you’ll get a bonus look at the now-Varvatosized CBGB’s next door at 315 Bowery. We’ll definitely be back.

EDGE GOES PUNK!!!

Edge, the WWE's "X-rated Superstar," wore a PUNK magazine t-shirt to the ring on the January 23rd edition of Smackdown! It's difficult to tell from the grainy YouTube video, but there he is--one of the greatest and most interesting professional wrestlers of this New Millennium--wearing a PUNK tee.
Edge has a history of wearing cool t-shirts, though--several years ago, when he was still just a lowly tag team partner, he wore a Trash and Vaudeville t-shirt during a promo.
Pro wrestling has always been a huge influence on punk rock, so this is not surprising. But we applaud Edge for his good taste in clothing.

THEATRE REVIEW: Punk Rock

IT is the first time that a Royal Exchange production has debuted elsewhere, but Punk Rock is worth the wait.

Fresh from a premiere at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, critics have already described its Olivier Award-winning writer, Simon Stephens, as one of the most talented dramatists to emerge in recent years.

It takes place in a fee-paying grammar school in Stockport, Stephens’ home town. His seven sixth formers, four boys and three girls, represent the competing egos and colliding angst of arrogant, precocious teenagers.

Punk Rock pulsates with the buzzing energy of highly intelligent and privileged youth. Stephens depicts this as a powerful blend of faux cynicism and confused optimism spiked through with shards of unspeakable, interpersonal cruelty. At its core though is an unpredictable nihilism that erupts into violence when the play’s troubled protagonist William Carlisle, brilliantly portrayed by Tom Sturridge, bursts into the library waving a loaded gun.

is as graphic as any I’ve heard in the theatre. Occasionally the desire to present acutely contemporaneous language seems too forced. But this is a small quibble, dwarfed by the fact that at this production’s heart is that magical quality exclusive to theatre as an art form: that nothing is ever what it really appears to be.

The performances and Sarah Frankcom’s direction are extremely assured. Though once again it is the remarkable Royal Exchange Theatre space that truly enhances the production. It invites you to join the sixth formers in the library and when the mayhem ensues, never lets you leave. The action becomes almost too unbearable to watch and some theatregoers near me covered their eyes as the tension was notched up.

There can be no doubt whatsoever that Stephens is a remarkable talent. By highlighting the schisms that society’s overblown expectations can cause in young people, he has given us a theatre visit that will not easily fade from memory.

Ellen Page

Who knew that one of my favorite actresses Ellen Page star of Juno and upcoming Drew Barrymore roller girl film Whip It also has a deep love for permaculture just like I do! Here is what she had to say, “I went to Oregon to study permaculture and lived in an eco-village for a month outside Eugene. It’s called Lost Valley. It was amazing and exactly what I needed, because there had been the Juno thing, where you’re getting a lot of attention,” Page says. “You’re learning how to live in a holistic way with the cycles of the Earth. At one point I was digging goat (manure) and putting it into a wheelbarrow, and while shoveling it, I just went, ‘Oh, my God, this is exactly what I want to be doing right now.’ “
